Located near the southern end of the coast, Galle is 72 miles south of Colombo and enjoys a stunning coastline. Galle’s origins go back even before the Western settlers arrived here in the 16th century. Owing to its strategic location, Galle was once a major trading port of precious gems, spices and other resources, and was Sri Lanka’s first international commerce and trade centre. Galle is a city with a colorful history and an old world charm.
Unawatuna, probably the best beach in the entire west coast of Sri Lanka is a major tourist attraction and is only 4 miles south of Galle. This picturesque beach along a sheltered bay is protected by a double reef and therefore great for year-round swimming. For divers it is a good base to explore some of the wrecks in Galle Bay and there is some coral within safe snorkeling distance of shore.
